george michael

image1-3there’s a lady i know who worked for many decades as a nurse, and then decided on early retirement to become a therapist, and when i asked her why, she said because many people coming into hospital, their ailments began with something going on in the mind.

i’m forever in awe of balanced people…those who’ve got a healthy sense of distance from things.. they don’t become unsettled or derailed by others ..they sit things out and let time untangle a problem, or they just let it go and move on.

surely artists aren’t so different from any other human kind..we’re all sensitive people.. paranoid, if given reason to be..ambitious in one way or another…obsessive if the hooks and claws come along to take a grip. if there’s any difference, it’s only in choosing to create work that could throw them up into a whole other stratosphere, giving more rope to hang themselves with, and plenty so called normal folk do that anyway, without creating art.

it’s strange casting the mind back to 1987 when people like george michael or whitney houston were hot property.. they looked so clean cut and heterogeneric.. you would’ve never have imagined things rolling out the way they did.

it doesn’t take a lot to distract anyone sensitive, but george was challenged by a few things..many will jump on the gay or drug issues, but i’m wondering if the initial element that derailed george was when his ‘listen without prejudice’ record wasn’t given the push of his previous record in america… it must have stunned george when after delivering supreme new music, to find his american label deem the record dead in the water and disappointing compared to his previous album ‘faith’… the head of the label at the time was a cocaine addict who fell from a great height himself and ended up counciling homeless addicts… in the 1980’s, recording artists from this part of the world were far too obsessed with the idea of making it in america..the land of milk and honey …maybe it’s different now…i dunno.

dear reader..if you listen to the opening track ‘praying for time’ now or even then, it’s easy to see he’d delivered something class and perceptive..just read george’s lyric here, and wonder if it doesn’t describe today’s world accurately… sonically it’s aged fairly well too, with its john lennon plastic ono band/ phil spector type production

praying for time…

These are the days of the open hand
They will not be the last
Look around now
These are the days of the beggars and the choosers
This is the year of the hungry man
Whose place is in the past
Hand in hand with ignorance
And legitimate excuses
The rich declare themselves poor
And most of us are not sure
If we have too much
But we’ll take our chances
Because god’s stopped keeping score
I guess somewhere along the way
He must have let us all out to play
Turned his back, and all god’s children
Crept out the back door
And it’s hard to love, there’s so much to hate
Hanging on to hope
When there is no hope to speak of
And the wounded skies above say it’s much too late
Well maybe we should all be praying for time
These are the days of the empty hand
Oh you hold on to what you can
And charity is a coat you wear twice a year
This is the year of the guilty man
Your television takes a stand
And you find that what was over there is over here
So you scream from behind your door
Say “what’s mine is mine and not yours”
I may have too much but i’ll take my chances
Because god’s stopped keeping score
And you cling to the things they sold you
Did you cover your eyes when they told you
That he can’t come back
Beacuse he has no children to come back for
It’s hard to love there’s so much to hate
Hanging on to hope when there is no hope to speak of
And the wounded skies above say it’s much too late
So maybe we should all be praying for time

when good work or a love life end up derailed, it’s not uncommon for artists to seek refuge through sex and drugs…you don’t have to be an artist for that to happen… dangerous vices are very effective at cancelling out unwanted feelings, but the business of music is a terribly political world…lots of executives drunk on power for a short time…you can catch some of them a few years later driving taxis or working on a flower stall for a living, but in their moment, they often hold the fate of others in their hands…

very little in this world is fair or even…that’s what we all end up having to getting our heads around when we find ourselves in a bit of a pickle…artist or no artist.

    i’m gonna struggle here
    something of reflection
    wide and deep
    as any still lake
    and there you have it
    your words
    bang on
    not a letter wasted
    not a ripple
    just clear
    in sight and sound
    beautiful
